Kim Picard is an Aboriginal Fashion Designer from Pessamit First Nations community. She is born from a Montagnais (Innu) mother and an Algonquin/Mohawk father. She has been living in Montreal for 15 years, she received a Fashion Design degree from LaSalle College in Montreal in 1997. Kim has worked for various companies, such as Natural Furs with Native Designer Darcy Moses, Native Innovation Designs, NTD Apparel, which specializes in movie character licenses, Roots Canada, Helene DeGranpré Haute-Couture, and many more… She also won some awards at the provincial and international levels. Picard took a sabbatical from the fashion industry for 4 years and worked for Quebec Native Women’s association as the Youth Coordinator.
She has always felt great concern for Native youth and the struggles they are faced with. She wanted to become more involved and contribute in an active way. She did many fashion shows in Canada and the United States and she participated in the Canadian Aboriginal Festival and the Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards many times with Turtle Concepts, a Native Company owned by Ojibway Dave Jones and specializing with Youth empowerment workshops, by using Medias, Sports, Art and Fashion. For two years in a row she also took part of the Fashion Show “Transcanada Runway” held in Montreal during the “Festival Mode & Design” in June 2009 and 2010. This show was regrouping 20 talented Fashion Designers from across Canada and she was representing First Nations. More recently, she was chosen with 7 other Aboriginal Designers to represent Canada at the “Aboriginal Fashion Showcase” during the Olympic Games in Vancouver in February 2010.
Kim is proud of her Aboriginal heritage, and is pleased to share her culture with others through her creations.
